Let me disclose by saying this skirt is not what I would call my typical style. For some reason I was drawn to it, though. I have been sewing the summer of maxi skirts, though – maybe that’s why. I had this lovely rayon challis from Sincerely Rylee that I thought would be perfect (again, despite the fact that I’m not a big floral fabric person) – all in all, this pattern was a bit risky for me. I wasn’t sure until I put it on if I’d even like it at all.
Yes. It is essentially a gathered square. But it’s exactly the right size of square resulting in this glamorous end product. I tend to stay away from gathers at the waist, but with the right fabric and this perfect waistband, this skirt is a home run. The pattern includes a wide waistband and a narrow waistband that is flat in the front and elastic in the back. I opted for the wide waistband because I thought it would be more flattering on my more rectangle-shaped body. One of my biggest lessons from sewing for myself is about what makes a garment more or less flattering. The wide, flat front waistband is the perfect balance for this long skirt. It’s finished so that all seams are enclosed and I really appreciate those details in a pattern.
I went out on a limb and added the sash because… why the heck not. Turns out I love it!
The skirt has several length options as well. I will certainly be making more – both in maxi and shorter versions. I love that it can be dressed up in a very classic style or I can tie a chambray button down over a tank for a Sunday morning brunch look. Versatility is key in my closet!
The pattern is on sale for the next week for just $6. Even at full price, it’s well worth it. There is a girls pattern too – and you can get a bundle that includes them all!
